In the off chance that there was someone still hanging around here, waiting for a golden morsel to drop from my plate (off chance? that’s the understatement of the century), I just thought I’d pop by for a quick hello and to tell you that: alas, no, I have NOT embarked on a tour around the world in a leaky boat (although I must say, that does sound tempting at times).

I’ve been busy with wedding plans and–oh, who am I kidding? We’re doing a destination wedding; most of the plans have already been made. What I’ve really been doing is having a bang-up time writing about them over on my other websites (taunt, taunt, taunt). Didn’t want to bore you with talk of tulle and stuff. You know how it is.

However, if you’re still hanging about here (and wow if you are – you deserve an award for patience!) then hey, drop me a line. I just might show you the trail of breadcrumbs leading to my usual hangout.

Another airline bites the dust. Jetsgo, CanJet (still operates charters but not commercial flights), Harmony… This is getting quite worrisome.

Why do I care so much? Well, I used to work for one that also went the way of the dinosaur.

I feel badly for not only all the customers (who will undoubtably get all the sympathetic press… I feel ESPECIALLY badly for the poor wedding party who now can’t get to their wedding destination) but also all the employees who are suddenly out of a job, in an industry where jobs are scarce.

Best of luck, guys. I feel for you.

Peonies make me happy. Almost as much as lilacs.

I treated myself today and got a bunch of peonies to keep me company at the office. By 5 pm I was almost drunk on the fragrance of summer.

When I was in grade twelve, I was on the Grad Committee and, along with my friend Jenny, charged with decorating the barn-like room (albeit on a lovely golf course) which housed our grad reception.

Since our budget was modest to say the least, we decided to go wandering around the neighbourhoods of our lovely little town of Okotoks looking for peonies in people’s gardens. Then we’d knock on their doors and ask them if they would kindly donate their peonies to the Class of 1995.

I can’t believe I actually did that. I’d totally forgotten about it until I started writing this.

What’s more, would you believe that I still have a vase at my parent’s house which holds five papery-thin dried out old peonies from that grad ceremony thirteen years ago?

I’m sure that tomorrow all I’ll be able to think about is my grade twelve grad. How funny. And what a long way we’ve come.

I have an Anne of Green Gables calendar pinned to the wall of my cubicle at work.

I bought it in P.E.I. last summer. I’m sentimental, I know.

It serves as a daily reminder of the dream-come-true holiday that my boyfriend (now fiance) whisked me away on… and that I’ll never ever forget until the day I die (and probably even afterwards).

I don’t know if you realize the importance of that trip, even if I spent a whole day trying to describe it to you. Let’s just say it was years and years and years worth of day-dreaming come true.

According to that calendar on my cubicle wall, almost twenty years, in fact. Twenty years since I fell in love with Anne Shirley of Green Gables fame.

And TODAY, it’s been one hundred years since that red-headed snippet was ‘born’.

June 10, 1908 – that’s the day that Anne of Green Gables was published.

At least, according to my “official” Anne of Green Gables calendar, that is. According to this article,

“She arrived on the Island on June 20, 1908, not in a carriage from the train station, but in a small parcel from the local post office, postmarked “Boston.” In it was the first copy of Anne of Green Gables [...]“

Whatever the actual date, the fact remains that Anne turns 100 years old this year. One hundred years of delighting girls and boys, women (and possibly even men) all over the globe with her enchanting ways and beguiling charm.

I, for one, have been fundamentally affected by the writings of L.M. Montgomery. Reading those books… living them… has, in no small way, defined the woman I am today.

It gave me great satisfaction to be able to tell Lucy Maud this last August, as I stood over her grave in Cavendish, P.E.I.

I like to think she knows.

At any rate, the evidence of it is in my heart.

I dedicate this month to Lucy, and to Anne.

I have much to say about both, so stay tuned.

For many, this weekend was the weekend of sex… Sex and the City, that is.

I actually am not one of those gals who have loyally followed SATC four years as they negotiated the waters of life and love (and yes, that ‘s’ word too). It’s not for lack of interest—I’ve fully enjoyed the few random episodes I’ve caught here and there but I could never really figure out when it was on and on what channel and it just seemed like a really big commitment I wasn’t ready for at the time.

But I get why SATC is more an obsession than a hobby for some.

For those people, having another chance to gorge themselves on the exploits, riotous conversation and drool-worthy Manolos of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte after they (the fans, that is) had been forced to say their tearful goodbyes for—what they thought would be—ever at the series finale, it must have been too exquisitely joyful for words.

At least, that’s the kind of reaction I was expecting from the hard-core SATC fans in the audience on Friday night.

As we lined up outside the theatre doors I had my misgivings.

The theatre we ended up at (Cavendish in Montreal… hey, tickets were really hard to come by and Katie and Jenna—or was it Mark?—were desperate) was pretty ghetto and didn’t exactly attract, ahem, girls for whom SATC was a style bible, ifyouknowwhatimean.

But once the lights went down and the first few notes of the SATC theme song came bouncing out of the speakers, I got the reaction I was looking for. The theatre heaved with a collective gasp and a few girls couldn’t hold back their squeals. The true appreciation of these fans was obvious.

I must admit, it was quite cute. Heart-warming, almost.

As the movie rolled along, it was punctuated with our reactions—bursts of laughter (that Charlotte scene is forever etched in my mind), groans of despair (don’t worry, I won’t ruin it for you) and—I couldn’t see but could FEEL it—tears of anguish and of joy.

It was a great movie, even for a non-SATC addict; maybe especially for a non-SATC addict. Since I didn’t have any preconceived notions as to what should happen or expectations as to its fidelity to the TV series, I could enjoy it for what it was: a fun story with endearing characters who delivered witty lines with panache, both metaphorically and physically (some of those clothes really were to die for)… and who made a lot of girls very, very happy this past weekend.

I totally envied them.

Now can someone please magically unearth a ninth book in the Anne of Green Gables series so I can experience the same delicious thrill?

Ok. Seriously? SERIOUSLY?!?!?

I’ve been waiting to see Joey McIntyre sing ‘Please Don’t Go Girl’ for twenty years and, wouldn’t you know it, the day he’s in Vancouver, I’ll be away… GETTING MARRIED.

Oh, the irony.

Sigh. It finally feels like summer! (Well, it did a couple days ago, anyway.)

Rob and I escaped Vancouver last weekend for the twins’ birthday party on the Island (Vancouver Island, that is) for a glorious sun-soaking, bbq-eating, popcan-shooting, pond-paddling, frog-catching, cake-munching day.

Ahhh….

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better… it did!

BC Ferries is currently having a sale on trips between Vancouver-Victoria, and Vancouver-Nanaimo/Duke Point.

Which means that for what would normally have been $69 (2 adults + a vehicle) for a one-way trip to the island, we paid only $30!!

That’s $60 instead of $138 for a fun-filled weekend, just a ferry trip away.

This promotion (if we can call it that) seems to be a bit confusing. We didn’t even know about it until we visited the website as there’s no advertising around for it. And while the website calls it a fare, the BC Ferries employee who took our money at the booth told us it was a ‘Customer Appreciation’ event.

Whatever the case, we love saving moola.

If you’re thinking of getting out of dodge for a few days, the CoastSaver sale fares are available until the end of June.

Just make sure you check the CoastSaver calendar online before you go–you may have to go from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay on the way there but leave from Duke Point to get back to Tsawwassen to get the CoastSaver both ways. That’s what we did. It wasn’t far at all, and well worth it.

Even if I didn’t have an excellent excuse to go back to Victoria soon (which I do… miss you Kym!!), I’d go. You should, too!

I’ll definitely look back on 2008 as the year the plastic bag died… and the year re-usable tote bags exploded on the scene.

It all started with that silly cloth bag:

And then the retail sector caught onto the hotness and started churning out their own versions. The first one I got was from Lululemon and I thought, wow, this is really cool.

Then Jacob had them and I thought, awesome, this is the perfect size to bring my lunch to work every day. But now EVERY store is handing them out like crazy–I have a Capers one and a Bay one and a TELUS one and probably more but I can’t remember. Everyone’s doing it. It’s not so neat anymore.

But I have to say, these new Commercial Drive banner bags bring the funky back to non-plastic bags.

Almost every year the Commercial Drive Business Society prints 256 32″ x 60″ nylon street banners which help create a festive, colourful atmosphere for this unique shopping neighbourhood. Eventually each edition of these unique designs must be retired, so rather than sending them to the landfill they’ve come up with a very green idea — transform them into reusable nylon shopping bags!

Now that is clever.

The banner bags are are available in 2 sizes ($9.95 & $14.95) and 10 different colours. Info on where you can get your hot little hands on one of these babies here.

This brought to mind those iconic banners that Calgary splashes all over the city each year for the Stampede–you know the ones…

Wouldn’t I love to get my hands on a bag made of one of those! (Yes I am both cheesy and nostalgic. As if you didn’t already know that.)

The other day I was seriously annoyed that there is not, nor do there appear to be any plans to open, a Sephora store in Canada’s THIRD largest city, Vancouver.

Today I have a new reason to be annoyed.

Apparently, Canada’s THIRD largest city, Vancouver, is also not important enough to make the list of locations for the forthcoming New Kids on the Block concert tour.

Man, it’s days like this that I wish I still lived in Montreal or Toronto (yes, I’ve done both). Granted, there don’t seem to be any west coast locations at all on the tour, but still.

To make me even more miserable, it’s raining today in Vancouver.

Crumminess all around!

On another note, can someone tell me what is the point of subscribing to receive news updates from NKOTB.com when they don’t send you any news, let alone the most important news of all–tour date announcements?! “Exclusive first access”, my @$$. Toronto’s already sold out!… and I got the news from someone’s Facebook update, of all things. Lame.
