Boy do I ever work with a bunch of wise guys.
When I got into the office this morning, I very nearly created a big mess. This is the trap that was waiting for me at my desk:

Oh guys you are sooooo funny.
I guess it could have been worse – that’s only one box of Jenga blocks.
Why do we have Jenga at the office? Well today after work we’re having our monthly TGIF (Thank God It’s Friday) get-together where we… well, get together… and have a couple of team-building beverages. We try to have a theme each time. Back in October we did a pumpkin carving competition, once we had a poker tournament and another time, we played Wii.
This time, it’s a Jenga showdown.
So to get ready for it, some of us were having a pre-game practice on my desk yesterday:

Oops.
I think Cisco needs to work on those Jenga skills.
Oh GREAT. Now I have that song in my head.
And I’m going to make you suffer with me:
“Jenga, Jenga, J-J-J-Jenga. You take a block from the bottom and you put it on top, you take a block from the middle and you put it on top. That’s how you build the tower; you just don’t stop. You keep building that tower putting blocks on top. It teeters and it totters, but you don’t give up; it weebles and it wobbles, but you build it on up. You take a block from the bottom and you put it on top, you take a block from the middle and you put it on top, till someone knocks it over, and that’s when you stop, but you can start all over putting blocks on top.”
In the blogging world, I’m a lightweight (special shout out to my very loyal readers… all THREE of you if I go by the number of people who leave comments…. c’mon, don’t be shy – say hi!!).
If you want to read a “real” Vancouver blogger, check out my friend Duane – photographer/software engineer/blogger/Jedi extraordinaire.
He’s in a showdown for the #1 Google ranking for the term ‘Vancouver Blogger’ so I thought I’d show my support.
GO DUANER.
May the force be with you.
I have several blogs in my Google Reader that I read every day, because they’re funny, well-written, passionate or just plain bizarre (sometimes all at once!).
The annual Canadian Blog Awards has just announced its finalists for 2007 – go check out the list and maybe you’ll find a new blog to love. Some of my favorites are in there. (And don’t forget to vote).
You can also go ahead and click on one of the links in the left column of my blog to see some other sites that I like a lot.
And of course, if you know of one you think is cool, leave a comment or drop me a line at purplegables at gmail dot com.
Since I’ve had age on my mind lately, it made me remember something hilarious that happened a few months back.
I was on the phone with Patti one day and we were talking about something or other… and in the middle of that conversation, I had to make some reference to a supermodel.
So I said, “…you know, like Christie Brinkley.”
“Christie Brinkley?!?!” Patti burst out laughing.
“Yeah…. What?” I asked, nonplussed.
“DUDE,” she exclaimed. “You are getting oooooold. Christie Brinkley was a supermodel, like, 20 million years ago! I can’t believe that when you thought supermodel, you thought Christie Brinkley!!!”
Of course, we both proceeded to laugh so hard we almost peed our pants.
Christie Brinkley is turning 54 this year.
(And as far as I’m concerned, she’s still supermodel-gorgeous.)
I am recovering from shock.
I’ve just finished reading my friend Clay’s account of his hospital visit yesterday. He just found out that he is going to have open heart surgery… triple (possible quadruple) bypass, to be exact…. at the tender age of 40.
Yes, I said “tender”.
It’s weird. I used to think 40 sounded so grown-up, so adult… so (sorry guys)… old.
But 40 is not old anymore! And not only to me. Sure, the numbers seem not as high as my own age increases. But it’s also everywhere in society these days. 30 is the new 20… 40 is the new 30… 50 is the new 40… etc. You’re at the apex of your life when you’re 40. And 40 isn’t any different than thirty, really. I never think of Clay as being any different from me despite the ten year’s difference. Same with Cisco, my other best friend at the office. Age doesn’t matter much anymore.
This went through my mind as I read about Clay’s ordeal. And I wanted to shout it out loud. This must be some sort of mistake?! It’s not fair he should have to go through something like this – not ever, hopefully, but especially not now.
And especially to a stand-up guy like Clay. He’s one of the truly good people out there. Very rare.
I’m more mad than anything, I think.
I know he will overcome it. He has a lot of things to do and a lot of love to give. But it’s still not fair.
DO YOU HEAR ME UP THERE?!?!? *shakes fist up at the skies*
NO FAIR!
