Today we’re exactly two years away from the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics here in Vancouver.
Evidence of the looming games has been popping up in more and more places lately. For me personally, I didn’t give much thought to the games until I first saw the Olympic countdown clock in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery. (That’s the infamous Miss Patti in the photo there.)
No wait, that’s not quite true. Before that, I did a lot of grumbling about the Canada Line construction that has caused lots of traffic havoc right near where we live – that’s the super fast transit line they’re building, largely for the Olympics.
Then in November the 2010 Olympic mascots were unveiled and I spent the morning fuming about how totally Japanese-cartoon-characterish they looked (I mean, I love Japanese, after all, they brought us sushi… but aren’t the mascots supposed to be Canadian?!?) until I got sucked into watching the animated intro to the 2010 mascots online and sort of fell into a bit of a love affair with Quatchi, despite myself. (I still think Sumi sounds too much like “sue me” – never a good idea to put into anyone’s head, and Miga is just… weird. If you ask me, she (he??) looks like a bear with mean cowlick.).
And tonight the latest Olympicky thing to hit my radar is happening: the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad Countdown Concert.
Or, as I like to think of it…
FEIST IS COMING TO TOWN!!!
Actually, that’s not even a joke, really. When I bought two tickets a couple months ago for this concert I didn’t really clue in that it had anything to do with the Olympics. I mean, I read the concert info on the Olympic website but my head was so full of FEIST! FEIST! FEIST! AWESOME!! that the Olympic bit got lost.
So I’m reeeaaaaally looking forward to tonight. It will be the third time I’ve seen Feist in concert; the first time was in 2005 in Montreal (shout out to Katie… woo-hoo!) and then again last year here in Vancouver – each time more amazing than the last, of course.
She’s a much bigger star these days than back then, what with her big award nominations and all (still can’t believe she didn’t win a Grammy – what a travesty!), but somehow I’m betting the magic will still be there.
Olympics? What Olympics?? It’s all about Feist.
